Ifosfamide is? (LQ)
Ans. A Alkylating agents
- Ifosfamide is a structural analogue of cyclophosphamide. The drug is activated by ring hydroxylation in liver. Importantly, it is not a metabolite of cyclophosphamide.
- The drug is used for reproductive cancers, sarcomas and blood cancers. It also produces hemorrhagic cystitis of urinary bladder and results in more alopecia than cyclophosphamide. Other side effects include thrombocytopenia and nephrotoxicity.
The drug can also cause CNS side effects. This can include hallucination, coma & death. This might begin with in hours to about a week and occurs due to a metabolite called chloroacetaldehyde (Goodman & Gillman’s
- Pharmacological basis of therapeutics’ 11th Edition, 2007, pp 1358).
