Obesity/over weight

Definitions:

1. Excess accumulation of fat in the s/c tissue and other parts of body.

2. BMI > 22 overweight * BMI = Wt (kg)/ HT (m)2

BMI > 25 obesity

a. Body mass index (BMI) > 85th percentile for the age and sex is overweight.

b. BMI > 95th percentile for the age and sex is obesity.

3. Skin fold thickness > 85th percentile for age and sex is obesity.

4. Wt/Ht: Upto 120% of expected is overweight.

> 120% of excepted is obesity.

Etiology:Exogenous factors (90%); Endogenous factors (10%).

Exogenous factors:

1. Dietary factors

2. Habits: sedentary life style, more T.V watching etc

3. Decreased energy expenditure

4. Genetic factors: Parental obesity. ‘Ob gene’ codes for protein called leptin, which affects the appetite set point.

MC4R gene:Melanocortin receptor gene is being studied.

Treatment: Decrease Caloric intake, Increase Physical activity and Behavioral modification.
