Gram Positive Bacilli
In a completely immunized child against diphtheria, the throat swab showed the presence of C. diphtheriae like organisms on Albert’s stain. These organisms can have one of the following properties on further lab processing; (AIIMS Nov 11)
|A||Can grow on potassium tellurite medium|
|B||Would show a positive Elek’s gel precipitation test|
|C||Can show cytotoxicity on tissue culture|
|D||Can be pathogenic to guinea pigs|
a. All corynebacteria (pathogenic or non-pathogenic) have the ability to grow on tellurite containing medium. The throat swab could show diphtheroids present as commensals or C.diphtheriae infection (Carrier) on Albert’s stain.
b. Rest of the options would be positive only in case of infection by toxigenic C.diphtheriae.
