Asphyxia

Question

In asphyxia organ to be dissected last- (AIIMS May 2012)

A Heart
B Neck

C Abdomen
D Thorax

Ans. B
(Neck)

a. The neck should be opened or dissected last in cases of death due to asphyxia.

b. This is because the neck structures (as well as the head) show marked congestion and suffusion of blood along with patechial hemorrhages in cases of asphyxia, therefore in an already congested neck it becomes sometimes difficult to distinguish between a bruise on the neck from congestion.

c. Therefore the neck needs to be drained of blood by opening the other structures (like head, thorax and abdomen) first so as to have a clear field devoid of artifacts.
