(Diagnosis of drowning-

a. Fine, white, leathery, copious froth or foam tinged with bloodQ seen at the mouth and nostrils (Froth is of lasting nature and large in quantity), D/D Opium poisoning, snake bite poisoning, Putrefaction.

b. Post mortem lividity is most marked in the head, neck and chest.

c. Washerwoman’s handQ- The skin of the hands or feet shows a bleached, corrugated and sodden appearance.

d. Cutis anserina=goose skinQ- granular appearance of the skin caused by contraction of Erector pilorum muscles are found on the anterior surface of the body, particularly the extremities.

e. Cadaveric spasm in handsQ– foreign bodies like grass, gravel, sticks, weeds, twigs or leaves may be found firmly in hands.

f. Mud or sand may be found under the finger nails.

g. Decomposition sets in early in case the body is taken out of water.

Internal findings of drowning-

a. The presence of a fine, white froth in air passages.

b. The bulky and oedematous condition of the lungsQ, which exude copious frothy blood stained fluid secretion.

c. The presence of water, mud, weeds etc. in the stomach or small intestine or both.

d. Paltauf’s haemorrhages are seen in drowning and are shining, pale bluish-red, haemorrhages present subpleurally, varying in size from minute to 3-5 cms in diameter. They are produced due to rupture of alveolar walls as a result of increased pressure produced during forced expirations. They are seen in lower lobes of the lungs, but may be seen anterior surface of lungs and the interlobar surfaces.

The presence of water in the middle ear.

Difference of chloride contents of blood in the right and the left hearts (> 25% difference is significant)– Gettler’s testQ.

a. Finding of diatoms by microscopic examination of tissues from brain, liver and bone marrow of long bonesQ such as femur, tibia, and humerus or sternum.)
