In the study of evolution we see that the protein sequence is different but the shape of protein is same, this is known as (AIIMS May 2010)

A Convergent
B Divergent

C Opportunistic
D Drift

Ans. A Convergent

a. Evolution has produced relatively limited number of protein folds and catalytic mechanisms. Convergent evolution (different sources) means proteins that differ in sequence and structure may have converged to similar active sites, catalytic mechanisms and biochemical function.

b. They didn’t diverge from a common ancestor but instead arose independently and converged on same active site configuration as a result of natural selection for a particular biochemical function.

c. Divergent (same ancestor) evolution can produce proteins with sequence and structure similarity but different functions or catalytic site shape.
