Subacute osteomyelitis

Occurs because:

  1. Increased host resistance.
  2. Decreased bacterial virulence.
  3. Administration of antibiotics before onset of symptoms

Causative Organisms

  1. S. aureus
  2. S. epidermidis

Clinical Signs & Symptoms

  1. Mild to moderate pain (dull aching), THE only consistent sign.
  2. Tenderness over involved site.
  3. Temp mildly elevated if at all.
  4. Plain radiograph and Bone Scan are generally positive.


  1. Curettage.
  2. IV antibiotics for 48 hrs, followed by 6 week course of oral antibiotics.
