Interpret the following data.
HCO3 = 8 meq / lit Ph = 7.40
PCO2 = 20 mm Hg PO2 = 90 mm Hg,
Na = 136 meq / lit. K= 4 meq / lit
What is your diagnosis? (AIIMS Nov 2014)
|A||Uncompensated metabolic acidosis|
|B||Uncompensated. Respiratory acidosis.|
|C||Compensated Respiratory acidosis|
|D||Compensated metabolic acidosis|
Compensated metabolic acidosis
In this question the PH is 7.40 (i.e. normal) so acid base disturbance has been compensated so option A and B are ruled out. Here PCO2 is 20 (i.e. respiratory alkalosis) so option C is ruled out.
As PH is 7.4 (compensated) and HCO3 is 8. Hence Option D is the answer.
