A kerion is a nodular, inflammatory, pustular lesion due to a fungus infection. Tinea capitis generally causes non-scrring alopecia, but kerion can cause scarring alopecia. In the cases caught from horses or cattle, kerion formation usually occurs. Kerions indicate an intense host immune response typically against Microsporum canis, Trichophyton verrucosum or T. mentagrophytes.
