Ladder pattern of DNA electrophoresis in apoptosis is caused by the action of the following enzyme – (LQ)

A Endonuclease
B Transglutaminase

C DNAse
D Caspase

Ans. A i.e., Endonuclease [Ref Robbin's 8th/e p. 27 & 7th/e p. 26, 27, 28]

a. Apoptosis progresses quickly and its products are quickly removed, making it difficult to detect or visualize.

b. During karyorrhexis, endonuclease activation leaves short DNA fragments, regularly spaced in size.

c. This gives a characteristic ladder appearance on agar gel electrophoresis.

d. This ladder pattern is characteristic but not specific for apoptosis.

e. It may be seen in necrosis also.
