Laser used in laryngeal work? (LQ)

A Argon
B CO2
C Holmium
D Nd Vag

Ans. B CO2 Laser Ref. Dhingra 5thled p 362, 61e p 351

CO2 laser is used in laryngeal surgery to excise vocal nodules, polyps, cysts, granulomas or juvenile laryngeal papilloma. Also used in case of leukoplakia, T1 lesion of vocal cord or localized leisions of supraepiglottis and infraglottis.

ALSO KNOW

CO2 laser has wavelength 10AOOnm

It is the work horse laser and has been used widely in ENT

It can cut pericisely (O.3mm percision), coagulate bleeders and vaporise tissues

Besides laryngeal surgery it is used in oropharyngeal surgery to excise benign or malignant lesions and in plastic surgery

EXTRA EDGE

Laser

Use in ENT

Comment

Argon laser

Used to treat port wine stain, hemangioma and telangiectasia

Used to create hole in stapes footplate

• Lies in the visible spectrum of light

• Wave length 485-514 nm (blue green colour)

• Easily transmitted through clear fluid ego cornea, lens, vitreous humor

• Absorbed by Hemoglobin

KTP Laser

• Stapes surgery

• Endoscopic sinus surgery to remove polys or inverted papiltomas and vascular lesions

• Micro laryngeal surgery

• To remove tracheo bronchialleisons through bronchoscope

• Lies in the visible spectrum of light

• Wavelength 532 nm

Nd yad laser

For debulking tracheo bronchial and oesophagealleisons for palliation, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia and turbinectomy

Wavelength 1064 nm (lies in infra red zone of electro magnetic spectrum)

Diode laser

Turbirate reduction, laser assisted stapedectomy and mucosa intact tonsillar ablation

Wavelength 600-1000 nm

Note:- Gas preferred in laser surgery-is enflurane'',

02 concentration in inhaled gases should not be more than 40%. Donot use N20
