Question
5 out of 7

Least clearance is for among these (LQ)

A Glucose
B Insulin
C Urea
D Creatinine

Ans. A Glucose

I. Renal clearance:

a. Definition: the renal clearance of a substance is the volume of plasma that is completely cleared of the substance by the kidneys per unit time.

b. Inulin clearance can be used to estimate GFR; Creatinine and Radioactive iothalamate are also used to estimate GFR. Normal GFR = 125 ml/min.

c. PAH clearance can be used to estimate Renal plasma Flow (RPF)

i. Total RPF = 650 ml/min, and

ii. Total Blood flow through both kidneys = 1182 ml/min

d. Filtration Fraction is calculated:

FF = GFR = 125 = 0.19

RPF 650

II. Comparisons of Inulin clearance with clearances of different substances:

Substances

Clearance Rate (ml/min)

Glucose

0

Sodium

0.9

Chloride

1.3

Potassium

12.0

Phosphate

25.0

Inulin

125.0

Creatinine

140.0

III. According to Ganong:

a. Q. Effective RPF = 630 ml/min

b. Q. Actual RPF = 700 ml/min

c. Q. Renal Blood flow = 1273 ml/min
