Therapeutic privilege

There are times when full disclosure of the patient’s condition may lead him to worsen or cause him to refuse beneficial or life saving treatment. In such a case for the patient’s sake, the physician may exercise therapeutic privilege i.e., he may deliberately withhold such information from the patient and communicate it to the next of kin/parent/guardian instead. But he must then obtain in writing from another physician an opinion as to the patient’s inability to take an informed decision on his own.
