Types of Abnormal Uterine Bleeding


Normal menstrual bleeding is 30-50 ml in 28 days cycle. Cause is usually uterine.

1. Dysfunctional uterine bleeding


2. Menorrhagia


3. Metrorrhagia


4. Polymenorrhea


5. Postmenopausal bleeding

6. Postcoital bleeding

7. Premenstrual spotting

8. Oligomenorrhea

1. Abnormal uterine bleeding with no demonstrable organic cause, genital or extragenital

2. Prolonged and/ or excessive uterine bleeding (>80 mL) occurring at regular intervals

3. Uterine bleeding occurring at completely irregular but frequent intervals, the amount being variable (intermenstrual bleeding)

4. Uterine bleeding occurring at regular intervals of less than 21 days

5. Bleeding occurring more than 1 year after the last menses in a woman with ovarian failure

6. Bleeding occurring after intercourse

7. Scant bleeding that occurs a few days, a week before menses

8. Menstrual bleeding occurring more than 35 days apart and which remains constant at that frequency
