Question

Midazolam has now almost replaced diazepam from anaesthesia practice because (AIPG 2009)

A It is cheaper

B It is less potent

C Half life is shorter than diazepam

D Less respiratory depression

E All of the above

Ans. C

Half life is shorter than diazepam

The chief advantage of midazolam is its short half life (2-3 hours) while that of diazepam is 36 hours. So there is no chance of respiratory depression in post operative period. That is why it can be used for day care surgery. Another advantage is that it is water based preparation so injection is painless. The disadvantages are its:

a. High cost.

b. More potency so respiratory depression is more profound.
