Obstructed labor

1. Vesicovaginal fistula (VVF) is defined as the communication between the bladder and vagina and the urine escapes into the vagina causing true incontinence.

2. This is the most common type of genitourinary fistula. In developing countries (such as India) the most common cause is obstetrical and constitutes about 80-90% of cases. The fistula may be due to ischemia or following trauma.

3. Ischemic fistula results from prolonged compression effect on the bladder base between the head and symphysis pubis in obstructed labor. It takes about 3-5 days following delivery to produce such type of fistula.
