Muscle glycogen is mainly utilized for supplying energy to
a. Major site for glycogen are the muscles and liver
b. Liver can mobilize its glycogen for release of glucose to the rest of the body, but muscle can only
use its glycogen for its own energy needs.
c. Glycogen content:
Liver → 4% = total/72 gm
Muscles →0.7% = 245 gm (total)
However liver contain more % of glycogen than muscle, but total content of muscle in
i. Liver glycogen → for maintenance of Blood glucose during fasting — for Brain and RBC
ii. Muscle glycogen → rapid source of glucose — for glycolysis i.e. energy for it self.
