NADPH is required for

I. The Pentose phosphate Pathway: - has two major function –
a. The generation of NADPH for reductive synthesis such as fatty acid and steroids biosynthesis and
b. The provision of ribose —phosphate for nucleotide and nucleic acid synthesis.
II. Fatty acid synthesis
a. Occurs mainly in cytosol Q — and requirements includes — NADPH, ATP, Mn++ Biotin and HCO3- (As a source of CO2 Acetyl CoA is the immediate substrate (Principle building Block of fatty acids) and free-palmitate is the end product.
b. Production of Malonyl — CoA is the initial and controlling stepQ (rate limiting) in fatty acid synthesis by Acetyl-CoA-carboxylase
