1. The Narcotic drugs and Psychotropic substances act was passed in 1985 and applies to the whole of India.
2. According to this act no person shall cultivate coca plant, opium poppy, cannabis plant of gather any portion of these plants or produce, manufacture, possess, sell, purchase, transport, use, consume, import or export interstate, import into India, export from India or transship any narcotic drug or psychotropic substance, except for medicinal or scientific purposes without permit or licence or authorization from central or state government.
3. Violation of this act in any manner entails punishment in the form of rigorous imprisonment and fine.
