Naltrexone is used in a case of opioid dependence
|A||To treat withdrawal symptoms|
|B||To prevent relapse|
|C||To treat overdose|
Naltrexone differs from naloxone in being orally active and having a long duration of action (1-2 days) which makes it suitable for opioid blockade therapy of post addicts. It causes loss of any subjective sensation following opioid ingestion.
It is also being used to treat relapse of heavy drinking.
