General Virology and DNA Viruses
Plaque assay is done for:
|A||Isolation and typing of viruses|
|B||Measuring the number of infectious virus particles|
|C||Determining the size of virus|
|D||Accessing multiplication of virus|
a. Two types of infectivity assays can be carried out – Quantitative and Quantal.
b. Quantitative assays measure the actual number of infectious particles in the inoculums.
c. Quantal assays only indicate the presence of or absence of infectious viruses.
d. Plaque assay is a quantitative assay of virus infectivity which is carried out on a monolayer cell culture.
e. Another method of quantitative assays is pock assays carried out on a chick embryo chorio – allantoic membrane.
