Anterior epistaxis

a. In anterior epistaxis, blood flows from arterior nasal opening

b. It is more common than posterior nasal bleeding

c. The common sites of bleeding are Little's area and anterior part of lateral nasal wall

d. It is usually mild and controlled by local pressure or anterior packing

e. It mostly affects children and young adults and the M/C cause is trauma.

Posterior epistaxis

a. Posterior nasal bleeding which is less common, but more severe, occurs spontaneously

b. Most of the patients are more than 40 years of age

c. The bleeding site which is difficult to localise is mostly posterior superior part of nasal cavity

d. The M/C cause is hypertension and arteriosclerosis

e. Bleeding is so severe that it requires hospitalisation and posterior nasal packing
