Prostaglandins found in the seminal fluid are the secreting products of

A Prostate gland .
B Seminal vesicle

C Leydig cells
D Sertoli cells

Ans. B Seminal vesicle
  1. Sertoli cells secretes:

a. Androgen - binding protein (ABP)

b. Inhibin(It is also secreted by granulosa cell; inhibin inhibits FSH secretion)

c. MIS (cause regression of the mullerian duct)

d. Sertoli cells also contain Aromatase the enzyme responsible for conversion of androgens to estrogens..

e. Serotoli cells forms the Blood - Testis Barrier.

  1. Leydig cells ~ synthesized testosterone.
  2. Semen:

a. Amount 2.5-3.5ml per ejaculate after several days of continence. Q

b. Seminal vesicle contributes 60% of total volume. Q

c. Seminal vesicles secretesfructose, citric ac id, and large amount of prostaglondin as well fibrinogen. Fructose major source of energy for sperm. Q

d. Prostate: contributes 20% total volume and secretes citrate ions, Ca++, phosphate ions, a clotting enzyme and a profibrinolysin.Q

e. pH of semen 7.35 to 7.50 Q

f. Sperm count avg. 100 milion/ml. Q

g. Human sperms move at a speed of about 3mm/min through the female genital tract, and reach the uterine tube 30-60 minutes after copulation. Q

h. Spermatozoa acquire full motility during their-passage through epididymis; capacitation takes place in female genitalia; Spermatogenesis takes 74 days to form a mature sperm Qfrom, primitive germ cells. The Length of a mature sperm is about 65m. (Head – 5μm, middle piece 5μm, principal piece – 50μm, and end piece – 5μm) Q

  1. Life expectancy of ejaculated sperm in the female genital tract is only 1-2 days Q(Guyton) [upto 120 hours - Ganong] and ovum lives for approximately 72 hours after it is extruded from the follicle. Q
