a. HSV2 is the main cause of genital herpes that is sexually transmitted. It manifests as a painful genital ulcer. Due to its propensity to cause latent infection in the sacral ganglia it causes recurrent attacks.
b. Infection can also be transmitted from the infected mother to the baby during birth leading to generalized infection. Encephalitis is more commonly caused by HSV1.
