C. Infection usually involves the metaphysis of long bones

Osteomyelitis is usually due to staphylococcus aureus infection. Streptococcus pyogenes, Haemophilis influenza and gram-negative organisms can also infect bone. In children the infection is usually aquired by haematogenous spread to the metaphysis of long bones. The dead bone within the medullary canal is the sequestrum. New subperiosteal bone formation is the involucrum.
