Reliable test for chancroid detection: (AIIMS Nov 2012)

A Skin test
B Biopsy

C Culture
D Clinical examination

Ans. C
Culture

Clinical diagnosis in case of chancroid is inaccurate, and laboratory confirmation should be made in suspected patients. Gram's staining of a swab of the lesion show a predominance of typical gram-negative coccobacilli ( School of Fish or rail road track ) , but the other bacteria present makes it difficult to reach any definitive conclusion. An accurate diagnosis of chancroid is made by cultures of Haemophilus ducreyi from the lesion.
