Scleritis is a chronic inflammation of the sclera ; bilaterally ; more commonly in woman It is associated with connective tissue disease in 50% of cases.

a. Rheumatoid arthritis (Most Common)

b. Polyarteritis nodosa

c. Systemic lupus erythematosus

d. Wegener's granulomatosis

e. Dermatomyositis

f. Polychondritis

Secondary glaucoma is a common sequel. Systemic steroid therapy is required for treatment.

10% phenylephrine is used to distinguish scleritis and episcleritis. Episcleral vessel will blanch, not scleral.
