The length of IP is characteristic of each disease.
In some the IP is very short ranging from few hours to 2 – 3 days eg: staphylococcal food poisoning, cholera, bacillary dysentery & influenza.
In some diseases IP is of median length ranging from 10 days to 3 weeks eg; typhoid, viral diseases like polio, chicken pox, measles, mumps etc. While there are others which have very long & variable IP like hepatitis A & B, rabies, leprosy & slow virus infections.
