1). Skin is the boundary between man and his environment and its paramount function is protection.

2). It may be divided into 3 layers viz. the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous tissue.

3). Although they arise in the dermis, glands, hairs and nails are epidermal structures.

4). Epidermis is an avascular cellular tissue consisting of 2 main layers of cells viz. stratum Malpighii, and stratum corneum (horny layer).

5). Stratum Malpighii is further subdivided into the basal layer & prickle layer from within outwards.

6). The principal function of epidermis is constant replacement of the stratum corneum which is being continuously shed and the differing cell types found within stratum Malpighii represents the stages in conversion of the epithelial cells into horn cells.

7). Total epidermal cell turnover time is 52-75 days.
