Question

Smoking should preferably be stopped:

A 1 week before

B 2 weeks before

C 4 weeks before

D 6 weeks before

Ans. D

6 weeks before

a. Smoking should preferably be stopped 6 weeks before surgery because complete recovery of cilia activity takes place in 6 weeks.

b. Stopping smoking 1-2 weeks before will reduce sputum volume but stopping smoking even 12 hours before is beneficial as it decreases nicotine (which improves cardiac function) and carbon monoxide levels (which decreases carboxyhemoglobin levels thus shifting oxygen dissociation curve to right thereby improving O2 delivery to tissues).
