Somatomedin are involve in : (AIIMS May 2009)
|A||Activation of lipolysis|
|B||Entry of glucose in to cell|
|C||Activation of gluconeogenesis|
|D||Promote deposition of chondroitin sulfate|
Skeletal growth with the aid of somatomedins (growth factors formed in the liver), which play a role in sulfate uptake by cartilage.
Somatomedin is a group of hormones that is produced, when stimulated by somatotropin (STH), to promote cell growth and division . In this way, they mediate the effect of somatotropin (also known as growth hormone ).
They have similar biological effects to somatotropin.
Three forms include:
- Somatomedin A, which is another name for insulin-like growth factor 2
- Somatomedin B, which is derived from vitronectin
- Somatomedin C, which is another name for insulin-like growth factor 1
Somatomedin C = insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) inhibits the release of GH by the anterior pituitary via negative feedback control. GH has lipolytic and glycogenolytic actions that are independent of somatomedin activity.
