Renal Involvement

i. There is intimal hyperplasia of the interlobular arteries, fibrinoid necrosis of the afferent arterioles, including the glomerular tuft, and thickening of the glomerular basement membrane.

ii. This change results in the development of renin induced hypertension.

iii. Sudden renal failure can occur.

a. Lymphocytic infiltration of minor salivary glands may occur leading to xerostomia (dry month)

b. Hypothyroidism occur in a significant number of patients and may be associated with high levels of antithyroid antibodies.
