The best way to dispose off mercury is

A Safe collection and reuse

B Controlled combustion

C Treatment with acid

D Deep burial

Ans. A Safe collection and reuse
  1. This question must be attempted with caution. Although mercury ic classified under chemical waste, it is also grouped under toxic hazardous waste and hence its disposal is different from discharge into drains or burial in secured landfill.
  2. Discharge into drains leads to its accumulation in the drains of water treatment plants causing water pollution and very high levels in treated water. Deep burial also leads to environmental pollution.
  3. Items containing mercury should never be sent to an incinerator as it causes release of mercury vapours in the environment which is toxic in nature.
  4. Hence, special norms have been laid down for disposal of mercury which may arise due tobreakage of a thermometer, sphygmomanometer, mercury tuge lights or mercury containing materials like tooth amalgam generated at dental clinics or thiomersal containing vaccines.
  5. The best pactice suggersted for disposal of mercury is its proper collection using specialized devices containing copper brush with which it forms amalgam, the its safe storage and reuse.
