The diagnosis of rotavirus is made by

a. Rotavirus the most common cause of diarrhea in infants belongs to the family Reoviridae. This virus has double stranded segmented RNA genome.
b. The virus is difficult to cultivate. Diagnosis of infection is by detection of viral antigen in stool by ELISA.
c. The virus can also be directly visualized in stool sample by electron microscopy. Serodiagnosis can be made by detection of specific antibodies in patients blood by ELISA.
