The mechanism of action of psoralen is: (AIPG 2012)
|C||Inhibiting protein synthesis|
|D||Binding to DNA|
Binding to DNA
1). In photochemotherapy the topically applied or systemically administered psoralens are combined with UV-A (PUVA. Psora lens are tricyclic furocoumarins that, when intercalated into DNA and exposed to UV-A, form adducts with pyrimidine bases and eventually forms DNA cross-links.
2). These structural changes decrease DNA synthesis and are related to improvement that occurs in patients of psoriasis. PUVA photochemotherapy also stimulates melanin synthesis.
