Question
3 out of 15

The most common cause of Post Operative ARF occurs due to? (AIIMS May 10)

A Direct renal injury

B Decreased renal perfusion

C Due to nephrotoxic antibiotics

D Due to renal toxicity of anaesthetic agents

Ans. B Decreased renal perfusion

(Ref. Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine 16th Edition pg. 1644)

A. Prerenal ARF is the most common form of ARF and represents a physiologic response to mild to moderate renal hypoperfusion.

B. Prerenal ARF is by definition rapidly reversible upon restoration of renal blood flow and glomerular ultrafiltration pressure.

C. Renal parenchymal tissue is not damaged; indeed, kidneys from individuals with prerenal ARF function well when transplanted into recipients with normal cardiovascular function.

D. More severe hypoperfusion may lead to ischemic injury of renal parenchyma and intrinsic renal ARF.

E. Prerenal ARF and intrinsic renal ARF due to ischemia are part of a spectrum of manifestations of renal hypoperfusion.

F. Prerenal ARF can complicate any disease that induces hypovolemia, low cardiac output, systemic vasodilatation, or selective intrarenal vasoconstriction.
