Polyp:

Classified either as neoplastic and non-neoplastic.

Non-neoplastic:

a. Hyperplastic polyp

i. M. C type of polyp

ii. 60-80% are in rectosigmoid

iii. Sessile lesion

iv. May develop sawtooth luminal profile

v. There is epithelial dysmaturation and hyperplasia

vi. Though no malignant potential but those with adenomatous foci may undergo malignant transformation

b. Juvenile polyps

i. Painless rectal bleeding

ii. M.C in rectum with juvenile polyposis syndrome

c. PJ polyp (Hamartomatous polyps)

i. Pedunculated

ii. Aut. Dominant inheritance

iii. Melanotic mucosal cutaneous pigmentation (around lips)

d. Themselves are non-malignant but pt. with PJ syndrome have an increased risk of carcinoma pancreas, breast; lung ovary and uterus
