1. Tracheostomy is done for the following indications:
a. As an elective procedure when prolonged ventilation is required.
b. As a change over procedure from intubation.
c. As a emergency procedure for failed intubation.
d. For upper airways obstruction by laryngeal edema, foreign body, bilateral vocal cord palsy, tracheal stenosis, laryngeal trauma, laryngeal and tracheal web.
e. Difficult intubation where neck movement is restricted like cervical spondylosis, rheumatoid arthritis, tetanus or when neck movement can be life threatening (C1-C2 dislocation).
