Trendelenberg test is positive due to injury to?

A Sup gluteal n
B Inf gluteal n

C Obturator n
D Tibial n

Ans. A

Sup gluteal n

a. Superior gluteal nerve injury

b. Trendelenburg test tests for the abduects mech of the hip joint and depends on integrity of

c. Femoral head = fulcrum

d. Femoral neck = lever arm

e. Effort = abductors (Gluteus medius and minimus)

f. The response is assesed by level of buttock folds positive trendelenburg is seen in pain on weight bearing hip abductor weakness shortening of femoral neck dislocation/subluxation of hip

i. The response is NORMAL (i.e. the test is "-negative") if the pelvis on the non-stance side can be elevated as high as hip abduction on the stance side will allow, and providing this posture can be maintained for 30 seconds with the vertebra prominens centred over the hip and foot.

ii. The response is ABNORMAL (i.e. the test is "positive) it' this cannot be done.

iii. MRC Grade 5 abductor muscle strength is required to produce a normal response.
