TRIAGE is the screening and classification of sick or injured persons during war or other disasters to determine priority needs for the efficient use of medical personnel, equipment, and facilities. It is also done in emergency rooms and in acute care clinics to determine priority of treatment.
The use of triage is necessary if the maximum number of lives is to be saved during an emergency situation that produces many more sick and wounded individuals than the available medical care facilities and personnel can handle.
It is important to provide a quick and convenient method of noting the condition of each casualty. This can be done by attaching a color-coded tag to the body of the patient or labeling UN traumatized skin with a marking pen. The classification is then upgraded or downgraded as indicated by the improvement or deterioration of the general condition of the patient.
