Clinical manifestations of ALL
a. Symptoms related to depression of normal marrow function.
i. An accumulation of neoplastic blast cells in the bone marrow suppresses normal hematopoisis by physical crowding and competition for growth factors.
ii. This results in: -
Anemia - Fatigue, pallor
Neutropenia - Infection, fever
Thrombocytopenia - Bleeding, petechiae, ecchymoses, epistaxis.
iii. These are the n osl common sign & symptoms.
b. Bone pain and tenderness
i. Resulting from marrow expansion and infiltration of the subperiosieum.
c. Generalized lymphadenopathy, splenomegaly and hepatomegaly
i. Caused by neoplastic infiltration ofthese tissues.
ii. More common in ALL rhan AML.
d. Symptoms related to compression of large mediastinal vessels or airway
i. ln Pre-T ALL of thymts.
e. CNS manifestation
i. Due to meningeal involvement.
ii. Headache, vomiting, nerve palsies.
iii. More common in ALL than in AML.
f. Testicular involvement is also more common in ALL than in AML.
