True about amoebic colitis except; (DNB June 20119)
|A||Caused by E.Histolytica|
|B||Cyst contains 8 nuclei|
|C||Flask shaped ulcers are present|
|D||Cecum is most commonly affected|
a. Cyst contains 4 nuclei.
b. Trophozoite are released from the cyst in the S I which divides by binary fission and localizes in the caecum.
c. Symptomatic (5-15% of infected)- Flask shaped/water bottle/undermined ulcers are formed in amebic colitis. The typical symptoms include bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, weight loss, fatigue, and dehydration.
d. Extraintestinal amoebiasis(only 5% of symptomatic cases)-When the organism invades the blood stream through the colon wall, it often lodges in the liver where it continues to multiply.
e. The liver reacts and creates an inflammatory wall around the organisms, leading to abscess formation. Diet rich in cholesterol & carbohydrate predisposes to invasive amoebiasis. Invasive amoebiasis is three times more common in men than in women, especially of lower socioeconomic status
