a. Staphylococcal food poisoning is caused by S.aureus.
b. Its incubation period is 6 hours. Foods, which are implicated are meat, milk and milk products that are contaminated following cooking by a food handler who is a carrier of S. aureus producing one or more enterotoxins.
c. There are 8 antigenic types of enterotoxins; A, B, etc. Type A is the most common cause. These are preformed, heat stable enterotoxin that can survive 100 C for 10-40 minutes.
d. Chief complaint is vomiting. However, diarrhea may also be seen. The illness is usually self limited.
