a. Acquired Immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS):
b. Caused by retrovirus called human immunodeficiency virus having tropism for CD4 molecules.
c. Routes of transmission-
i. Sexual contact
ii. Parenteral transmission
• IV drug abusers
• Hemophilic patients
• Recipients of blood and blood products
iii. Perinatal transmission (mother to newborn)
d. Besides blood also isolated from semen, vaginal secretion, cervical secretions, breast milk, CSF, synovial, pleural, peritoneal, pericardial and amniotic fluid.
e. HIV contaminated waste products can be sterilized and disinfected by
i. Formaldehyde 5%
ii. Ethanol 70%
iii. Glutaraldehyde 2%
v. Heat sensitive (56°C for 30 min)
