Ans. D

Membranous urethra

1. Membranous urethra is lined by stratified (or pseudo-stratified) columnar epithelium.

a. Urothelium (transitional epithelium) is present at:

i. Terminal lining of collecting tubules ii. Minor & major calyces

iii. Renal pelvis iv. Ureter

v. Urinary bladder vi. Proximal urethra

2. MALE URETHRA

LINING

Proximal

Transitional (Urothelium)

Major lining

Pseudo-stratified or stratified columnar epithelium

Terminal

Stratified squamous (non- keratinized) epithelium

a. Proximal half of prostatic urethra (till the opening of common ejaculatory ducts) is lined by the continuation of bladder epithelium – Urothelium.

b. Distally, most of the male urethra is lined by pseudo-stratified or stratified columnar epithelium.

c. Terminal urethra is lined by stratified squamous epithelium. The terminal most urethra becomes keratinized.

3. FEMALE URETHRA

Proximal

Transitional (Urothelium)

Main lining

Stratified squamous (non- keratinized) epithelium

Rule: Epithelium which can be touched by fingers is usually lined by stratified squamous epithelium and is a derivative of ectoderm.

a. E.g.,

i. External ear canal (including external surface of tympanic membrane)

ii. Cornea, conjunctiva

iii. Nasal vestibule

iv. Oral cavity

v. Terminal anal canal (below dentate/pectinate line)

vi. Terminal urethra

4. Epithelial lining at important sites:

LINING

SITE

Simple squamous

- Pericardium, pleura & peritoneum

- Type – I pneumocytes (alveoli)

- Bowman capsule and Loop of Henle (major part)

Stratified squamous

- External ear canal (including external surface of tympanic memb.)

- Cornea, conjunctiva

- Nasal vestibule

- Oral cavity: lips, tongue, palate, tonsils, epiglottis (oral part)

- Terminal anal canal (below dentate/pectinate line)

- Terminal urethra

Simple cuboidal

- Thyroid follicles

- Germinal epithelium of ovary

- PCT, DCT and some parts of Henle’s loop

Stratified cuboidal

- Exocrine ducts, like lacrimal, salivary, sweat

Simple columnar

- Stomach and intestine

- Gall bladder

- Collecting tubules of kidney

Stratified columnar

- Male urethra

Pseudo- stratified columnar

- Male urethra

- Respiratory tract

- Epididymis, ductus deferens

Ciliated columnar

- Respiratory tract

- Uterine tube & Uterus

Columnar with micro - villi

- Small intestine (striated border)

- Gall bladder (brush border)

Neuro - epithelium

- Ear, Nose, Tongue and Eye (retina)
