Which anti cancer drug is eliminated by lung: (LQ)
a. 5-FU is a metabolite of flucytosine and inhibits the ‘thymidine synthetase’. It is a prodrug and requires intracellular conversion into the active and phosphorylated metabolites.
b. It is a short acting drug with half life of 10-15 minutes. It is poorly absorbed by oral route and hence is best given by IV route.
It is the drug of choice for colorectal cancer. Most common side effect is gastrointestinal upset. Other side effects include hand foot mouth disease and bone marrow suppression (BG Katzung, Basic and Clinical Pharmacology; 10th Edition’ 2007, pp-889-90).
