Oncology and Fibroids
Which of the following is false regarding red degeneration of fibroid? (DNB June 2012)
|A||Occurs as a result of outgrowth of blood supply|
|B||Immediate surgery is required|
|C||Occurs only during pregnancy|
|D||Presents with pain in abdomen and nausea|
Immediate surgery is required
1. During pregnancy fibroids are peculiarly prone to undergo 'red degeneration' necrobiosis; the tumor becomes tender and painful, and there may be a rise of temperature and constitutional symptoms.
2. The condition seldom lasts for more than a few days and usually subsides under expectant treatment.
3. Majority of cases of uterine fibroid require only careful supervision during pregnancy and bed rest and sedatives if the tumors cause discomfort or pain. Pregnancy should be allowed to continue until term, unless severe complications due to position. size or progressive degeneration of the tumor arise.
