a. Rocky mountain spotted fever caused by R. rickettsii is transmitted by hard tick. It is the most severe of the spotted fever rickettsiosis.
b. It is characterized by acute onset of fever, severe headache, and myalgias.
c. The rash occurs two to six days later, first in the hands and feet, and then moves to the trunk. Diagnosis must be made on clinical presentations, and therapy instituted immediately. Laboratory diagnosis is made on a rising antibody titer (delayed). Untreated disease can be fatal.
