Which of the following conditions is most likely to predispose to plantar fasciitis? (AIIMS Nov 2009)

A Equinovarus deformity

B Contracture of the Achilles tendon

C A plantar spur on the calcaneus

D An old fracture of the calcaneus

Ans. B

Contracture of the Achilles tendon

a. Tightness of the Achilles tendon is related to the development of plantar fasciitis. Normally, ankle dorsiflexion increases after heel strike in the stance phase of gait.

b. If dorsiflexion is limited by tightness in the Achilles tendon, stress is transferred to the plantar fascia. Acquired planovalgus deformities have also been shown to be associated with increased incidence of plantar fasciitis.

c. Plantar calcaneal spurring is an incidental finding.
