Gastrin: ­

I. Gastrin is typical of a number of polypeptide hormones in that it shows both macroheterogencity and micro-heterogencity.

II. Types - G34, G17 and G14gastrins.

III. G17 is the principal form with respect to gastrin acid secretion.

IV. Gastrin is produced by cells called G-cells in the lateral wall of the glands in the ANTRAL PORTION of the gastric mucosa.

    1. Other sources - Pancreatic islet in fetal life, anterior and intermediate lobes of the pituitary gland, in the hypothalamus and medulla oblongata, and in the vagus and sciatic nerves.

V. Atropine does not inhibit the gastrin response to a test meal in human, because the transmitter secreted by the postganglionic vagal fibers that inneovate the G-cells is GRP rather than acetylcholne.
